This sloppy code runs a $20 billion, bleeding edge, financial system. I’ve written, and still do write, sloppy production code like this. However, some of the key stewards of this particular code base think they walk on water.

Believe me, if this is “sloppy coding”, then I’ve seen The Flames of Hell more than a few times in my past years. Seriously, I would refactor and clean up this code for sure, but it surely is not that bad.
Agreed. Even after 30+ years, I write code like this all the time. 🙂 However, the main reason for being so “Felix Unger” nitpicky in this particular instance is due to the last sentence in the post.
You gave away where this code is from with that “const BITCOIN_CONF_FILENAME”
