Survival Machines
In “The Selfish Gene“, proud atheist Richard Dawkins theorizes that we are just temporary “survival machines” doing the bidding of the selfish genes within us. These little buggers program us such that we live long enough to propagate “them” onward (via sexual reproduction, of course) from generation to generation – forever. Selfish genes don’t give a damn about the individual survival machines they temporarily use for transport. WTF!, and very depressing if you believe in his logically sound, equation-backed “derivation“, no?

I love it when you write a blog that I can comprehend 😉
Hah! I’m a schizo who’s all over the map and doesn’t know who his audience is.
No, it’s not depressing. Just suspend disbelief for a few moments, and believe it is true (just pretending, don’t panic). Now what do you do differently?
I’m guessing now, you haven’t gone and raped or killed anyone, or even hurt anyone? So you still have a moral compass. Now what religious stuff did you use to do? Well, if you want to, carry on. If you help disadvantaged people you still can, religion doesn’t own being a good person. But realise you do stuff because you want to, you enjoy it, not because a big, powerful father figure will make you suffer if you don’t. And maybe there was some religious stuff you didn’t enjoy, so ditch it. Boring sermons? Letting your kids be beaten by nuns? Well stop it. It doesn’t matter.
OK, pretendings over, back to normal now. So, was it a depressing few minutes? I don’t mind either way, you must do what you makes you happy. You don’t need to agree with me. And there is a key difference between a religious and a non religious person. I want you to be happy, and if religion helps I am OK with that. Can you say the same about my non-religion?
I hear ya. I’m not religious, but I consider my self somewhat “spiritual” (pseudo-religious?). I definitely don’t believe in a “point source” God that looks like us and watches our every move. I’m more in tune with the Eastern way of thinking.
