The “E” Test

From Dan Pink’s “FLIP Manifesto“:

To take the E test, draw the letter “E” on your forehead. Oops, too late. You already know which way is the “correct” one.

    In some cases (not all, mind you), there may be a flip side of this. People in positions of significant responsibility have virtually all of their performance assessment based on the work of others. Think baseball managers and NFL coaches.

    If they have the right mix of talent, like Coughlin and Belichik that can be manageable. But if they don’t, like Rahim Morris (TB) or Jack Del Rio (JAX) that can be a scary place. It probably feels like the “trust fall” from the top of a 10 story building. My guess is that fear, based on a lack of confidence in you subordinates abilities can be an “empathy killer.”

    This is intended as a counterpoint rationalization in behavior, possibly applicable in some cases. Of, course, even in this situation, losing empathy is probably the worst strategy. But at least it might be rational.

    Hmmm…Is it empathy to draw the E from the viewers perspective, or simply a better understanding of how to communicate effectively? Perhaps that’s why bad managers are bad
